Great day to you all again and welcome back to keys2unlock, a blog dedicated to encouraging and sharing what God has unlocked in me to share with others. I pray you are doing well and are ready for Part 2 of Shhh! So, lets jump right in and see what the Lord has in the edition of keys2unlock.
We were previously discussing Samson and Delilah and how Samson exposed himself to the constant impacts of nagging and how Delilah’s persistence paid off and she got the information/secret she needed to complete her task. In part 2 today I want to discuss how it is important to be quiet but vigilant whatever that means for you.
In World War II there was a slogan that was used as a propaganda campaign, the slogan “Loose lips sink ships” was printed on signs and posters. It was displayed to make people aware that speaking out about certain things could put their loved ones in danger. Careless talk was ill advised. Some experts believe that the true purpose was to cut the spread of rumors and bad news which affected morale and could cause negative tension not only here in American but out on the Naval ships out fighting in the war.
There were 3 women that are mentioned in the Bible that Samson dealt with. His wife, then there was a harlot and finally Delilah. Prior to Delilah Samson had a wife who at some point pressed (nagged) Samson into giving her the answer to the riddle that he posed to the Philistine men. Then his wife told them the answer after they threatened to burn her and her father’s house. Samson said to the Philistine men “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle!” A yoke is a wooden piece that is connected over the neck of two animals and then attached to a plow or a cart enabling the animals to pull together. He was referring to the yoke (or connection) that the men had with Samson’s wife to do the work of dredging up the answer to the riddle. See she cheated and manipulated and so did the men they cheated and manipulated for the same purpose thus they were yoked together for a common purpose. Which speaks to so much of our own lives if you really think about it and also to what Samson was actually doing as well. Clearly there was some exposure there that allowed the Philistine men to leverage Samson’s wife into helping them take advantage of Samson.
Later on, in Judges Samson becomes involved well he actually loved a woman by the name of Delilah whom we talked about in Part 1. The lords of the Philistines seem to have appealed to what they learned of Samson from his history by paying off Delilah to get the information from him. See lions hunt for their prey either alone or in prides. When they hunt together or in collaboration it is usually the lioness who initiates the kill. 1 Peter 5:8 reads “Be sober, be vigilant (or alert); because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Our adversary is walking about seeking, hunting, so important for us in the midst of trials and tribulations or difficult situations but also during the moments when not experiencing these things remain vigilant or alert don’t drop your guard, don’t fly off at the mouth. Check yourself and your responses because in the trees or hiding in the bush or sometimes right under your nose the adversary is watching, listening and waiting to find his way in. His ways in in most cases involve moments of weakness. These are telltales that the enemy pays attention to those weaknesses so that he can exploit them. The lion waits for the perfect time to attack based off of their observations and assessment of the prey. As they stalk/hunt they get closer and closer then try and pounce on or try and knock it over. Ever been knocked down?
I say this to say don’t allow your history and actions, to show your weakness and expose it to the enemy. See this message is titled “Shh!” but I’m not just talking about watching what you say. I know we have all heard the saying actions speak louder than words and usually people use this to refer to an apology or something of that sort but it can mean the way you walk, how you respond to hurt, how you respond in the midst of a trial, or in your reckless moments. Maybe Samson weakness was not having self-control because he continuously broke the covenant he had with God. The Philistine men saw this because Samson was openly exposing a vulnerability and the men took advantage of the situation. Did Delilah become more important than his promise to God? Is there a Delilah in your life? Come on y’all it doesn’t have to be a woman or a person for that matter. Think deeper! Both Samson’s wife and Delilah leveraged his love as a means to get him to open up and tell something that was a secret. Delilah’s attempt had a more significant affect as it caused him to abandon his Nazirite vow (well he went against the vow before this part) to God and then once his hair was removed the lack of obedience to the vow caused the Lord to depart from him. Ok I’ll ask it this way who/what are you yoked with that could cause you to abandon your call or purpose in God?
If you desire to go deeper and look into the Nazirite vow, check out Numbers 6. Did he break the vow when he took the clothes off the dead men in Judges 14:19?
In most applications we know that the flesh has not the power to tame the tongue only the Holy Spirit. Remain focused on the purpose God has for you Maybe you don’t know what that is, well if that is the case then that is a whole other message. But assuming that you do know then you should do your best to not become distracted by the things that are designed to expose you to the enemy.
Don’t think I’m beating up on Samson, God still used him and throughout the 4 chapters that deal with him from his birth to the fulfillment of God’s promise to Samson’s mother (Manoah’s wife) that samson would begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
